The user guide already mentions that this feature will use more memory:

It shouldn't run slower at runtime, it should allow faster updates (painting/erasing) at the cost of using extra memory. With procedural meshes you should be using a chunk size of 100x100 especially when "Mark Procedural Dynamic" is set for best results.
